Is Oregon Blockbuster Still Open
Quip SilverIf you're a fan of nostalgic movie nights or simply love browsing a vast collection of films, you might be wondering whether Oregon Blockbuster still operates today. Once a staple in communities across the United States, Blockbuster Video stores offered a unique shopping experience for movie enthusiasts. Over the years, the landscape of video rental stores has drastically changed due to digital streaming services and shifting consumer habits. In this article, we'll explore the current status of Oregon Blockbuster, its history, and what options are available for movie lovers today.
History of Blockbuster in Oregon
Blockbuster Video was founded in 1985 and quickly grew into a dominant force in the home video rental industry. By the 1990s and early 2000s, it had hundreds of stores across the United States, including locations in Oregon. These stores became community fixtures, offering residents a chance to rent movies and video games in a physical storefront, often with friendly staff and a wide selection of titles.
Oregon, known for its vibrant communities and love for entertainment, had several Blockbuster stores scattered throughout cities like Portland, Eugene, Salem, and others. These stores were not just places to rent movies; they became cultural hubs where families and friends gathered for movie nights and shared experiences.
The Decline of Blockbuster
Despite its popularity, the rise of digital streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video led to a significant decline in physical rental stores. With the convenience of instant access to thousands of movies at home, consumers gradually shifted away from renting DVDs and VHS tapes from brick-and-mortar stores.
Blockbuster struggled to adapt, and many stores closed down across the country. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2010 and gradually exited the retail space. By 2019, only a handful of independently operated stores remained, some of which operated as franchisees or nostalgic outlets.
Is Oregon Blockbuster Still Open?
As of October 2023, the answer to whether Oregon Blockbuster is still open is nuanced. Most of the original company-owned stores have closed, and the brand has largely become a nostalgic memory for many. However, there are a few independent stores that continue to operate under the Blockbuster name or as themed video rental shops inspired by the brand's legacy.
Current Status of Blockbuster Locations in Oregon

What About the Blockbuster Brand Today?
In recent years, the Blockbuster brand has experienced a surprising revival. In 2020, a single franchise location in Bend, Oregon, gained international attention as the last remaining Blockbuster store in the world. This store has become a popular tourist attraction and a nostalgic reminder of the pre-digital era.
Additionally, the brand has been used for marketing and pop culture references, but the official chain has essentially disappeared. The Bend store operates as a franchise and caters to visitors seeking a retro experience, offering movie rentals, merchandise, and themed events.
